3 years ago I replaced every single window in my home. I had never installed a window before this but decided to attempt it - mainly because I didn’t want retrofit/renovation style windows without nailing flanges. I couldn’t find a window company that would be willing to take all the siding/trim off, install the window, flash it and re-install the siding. Though it probably took me 5x longer, I was so glad I did it. I was able to inspect the sheathing to make sure it was dry with no rot. I was also able to add sill flashing and insulate it better than what it was before. I enjoy learning new things. 2 years ago I replaced my roof without ever having done a roof before. I’m so glad I decided to do that as well. It’s given me the confidence to replace the roof on my rental house later this summer. There are SO many free resources out there. With the roof product I used, there were many installation videos to reference, as well as installation manuals and customer support where you can call a rep to clarify details. With anything, you have to calculate your lost time at work if you decide to do big projects yourself, as well as weigh out the value of learning. For myself, nothing can replace the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment I get succeeding in doing something I’ve never done before. Part of my goal in life is to never be “stagnant” - consistently learning and bettering myself as a person. What’s on your bucket list of learning?
