One of the ways I gently help clients reorient is through a simple metaphor: the car keys. You see, I’ll hold out an imaginary set of keys and ask, “Who’s taking the wheel today?” Is it the child part of you scared, reactive, overwhelmed? Or is it the adult in you resourced, present, grounded? We cannot go into the world, get behind the wheel, navigate our relationships, our responsibilities, or even our choices from a child state. It’s not about suppressing that part. It’s about letting the adult lead, while the child part is seen, heard, and held with care. So much of healing isn’t about “fixing” ourselves.
