I always thought it was just me until I began to see how often this showed up in people who had grown up with narcissistic parents or lived through narcissistic relationships. The half-unpacked boxes. The blank walls. The “temporary” sofa that somehow stays for years. The restlessness after a few years in one place. That urge to move again. Start fresh. Not chaotic. Not lazy. Just staying in the “temporary loop”. When you grow up with a narcissistic parent, or spend years with a narcissistic partner (just like I did) your nervous system adapts to instability. Love can be warm one moment and withdrawn the next. Approval can flip into criticism. Your preferences might be mocked, ignored, or controlled. You learn that safety is conditional… So your body becomes hypervigilant. Hypervigilance isn’t just anxiety. It’s constant readiness. Ready for moods to shift. Ready for emotional distance. Prepared for pain. Ready to adjust yourself. Over time, that readiness becomes your normal state. You stay slightly prepared to detach or leave, even when no one is asking you to. Putting roots down can feel exposed. Vulnerable. Almost naive. Decorating means claiming space. It means saying, “I’m staying.” It means letting yourself belong somewhere. And if belonging once led to humiliation, control, or sudden loss, anchoring feels risky. Temporary feels safer. Mobility feels protective. And this doesn’t only show up in your home. At first, I smiled thinking it was cute but then I noticed his body tensing, little twitches turning into jerks, and a strange restlessness I couldn’t ignore. I looked around the room and my heart sank… a small scented candle had tipped over earlier, and he had licked some of the wax. The vet explained that certain candle ingredients and fragrances can irritate a dog’s system, sometimes causing muscle spasms or sudden tremors. I took him straight to the vet.
