Reverse hyper extensions are more widely used as multi purpose gym tables than a valid way to strengthen the lower back. You can load the lower back in 1000s of ways. The reverse hypers one of the few that doesn’t load the spine from the top down. Can be very useful if your grappling all the time. All exercises have validity in one way or another regardless of what a floating head on a 20 second training video might say. The reverse hypers just one I swear by and one I see very little people doing.

Reverse hypers aren’t a “maybe” for me, they’re a staple. I do them almost every time I train. And the machine is always open - I have never seen anyone else use it at the gym - a freaking travesty. Louie Simmons created the reverse hyper because his back was wrecked and he needed a way to decompress the spine while strengthening the posterior chain. It works because it does both at the same time. You’re training glutes, hamstrings, and low back while tractioning the spine every rep. That’s rare. And yes, I use momentum on purpose. Controlled momentum increases blood flow, pumps nutrients into the low back, and creates that decompressive effect Louie designed it for. This isn’t a slow grind lift. It’s about rhythm, traction, and restoring your back while making it stronger. If your lower back hurts, feels tight, or limits your training, reverse hypers aren’t optional. They’re insurance. Credit where it’s due, Louie Simmons changed back training forever.

Smith Machine Reverse Hyperextension 🔥🍑 I know this one looks a little weird, but it hits your upper glutes like craaazyyy while keeping pressure off your lower back! 💪 How to do it: 1. Set a bench under the Smith machine so your hips are right at the edge 2. Hold the sides of the bench and keep your ribs down (no arching) 3. Place your heels under the bar, toes slightly turned out and drive your legs up using your glutes, not your lower back. Think about thrusting your hips into the bench 5. Lift until you reach a comfortable squeeze, pause for 1 second, lower with control This is a great accessory to add at the end of your workout! I do 3 sets of 12-15 reps If you try this, go light at first.
