Rhythm Games - 1st through 5th grade 🎵 It’s so fun to try new things! I had two days of extra classes where I needed to not teach new material, so we did some rhythm review - and the kids LOVED these games! 1. Rhythm Match: Students were given a button with a recorded rhythm or a piece of paper. They have to find their match! For the older grades, I made them not talk the second time 🫣 2. Rhythm Detectives: Once we played Rhythm Match twice, students hid the matches around the room! Then they were sent off on a scavenger hunt to find every rhythm. I love how having the buttons there allowed students to not only see and read the rhythms but hear them also. For my more advanced classes, I took the visual rhythms away and just left the buttons so they had to write only what they heard! Once they found every button and wrote every rhythm, they met me in the center of the room where I got to do a small group check to make sure they could read and clap the rhythms. Once they did, they were give permission to grab instruments and practice independently. These two activities took the whole class and we did it from 1st - 5th grade. @sweetlymollie gave me this great idea a few weeks ago and I’ve been meaning to try it out! I call it Rhythm Charades. Each rhythm has a corresponding action—for this game it’s quarter note=stomp, 8th notes=clap, rest=snap. I know that the rest makes sound in the game and not in “real life” but my kids are used to whispering “rest” when they see a rest, so the quiet snap made most sense to me. How I play the game: Show a rhythm card and give kids processing time. Count them in and then guess the correct rhythm based on their actions. It’s a super helpful assessment tool without make kids feel like they’re being assessed because it’s incredibly obvious who gets it right away and who needs more help. This is the first time this group has played the game and it took a little getting used to. I’m hoping to add 16th notes in soon, but will need to get them more comfortable with these rhythms first.
