Gigi has been begging to take riding lessons since the first time she laid eyes on a horse. Watching her face light up with true genuine happiness was the best feeling. She absolutely loved it and hasn’t stopped talking about her horse Poppy, since 🥹🫶🏻

Life changing lesson last night! Sophie learned to ask Lady to canter while doing something that makes her need to focus more on what she's doing than the canter itself! So they jumped a tiny cross rail and centered after it. She's calmed down already at the lesson. Barn and is working so hard on making her canter as slow and relaxed as her walk and trot. So proud of these 2! #canterwork #riding lessons #dutchharnesshorse #clydsdalecross

When I was younger, my riding lessons started with a trip to the grocery store. A bag of carrots in hand, I was sure this was the secret to my horse liking me. That’s all we were taught: catch them, feed them, ride them, feed them again. Don’t get me wrong, food rewards, and a carrot here and there can be wonderful to add to the relationship…. But they shouldn’t be the sole way to communicate and build that bond. As a child, I had to stumble through years of confusion before I realised something much bigger: Horses don’t value what’s in our pockets, they value how we train. They value our presence. They value quiet time. They value consistency. The moments of just being together - with no agenda , turned out to be the strongest foundation for connection. As a child, I turned up to ride, offered a carrot and assumed the relationship transaction was over. but now, I’ve built my business around helping horses transform challenging behaviour whilst keeping the relationship and bond strong and growing with each session. It’s the little daily choices that make a lifetime of trust. 🐴💛 Want a stronger bond, to truly start to communicate better with your horse? I was eager to learn. Ready to make changes and owning that it was my responsibility to show up better for my horse. But my Feel was still being developed, my Timing was off and my Balance was nonexistent. I was a very fumbly learner as I navigated my Horsemanship skills. So much so that I would often feel extremely uncoordinated and embarrassed as I was learning. It took A LOT for me to feel safe enough to ask questions and seek guidance. Looking back I now understand why. Many of my instructors at the time subscribed to the, “Break them down so we can build them back up” mentality when teaching other humans. That only left me feeling like I would NEVER, no matter what, be good enough for my horse. Because the thing was…. They never “built me back up.” They just tore me down. And that’s not instruction anyone should be paying for! I was regularly made to feel like a failure, belittled in front of my peers and screamed at for the slightest mistake. I’d regularly end my riding lessons in tears and full blown panic attacks were a regular occurrence in this period of my life. As I made progress slowly, despite what I was experiencing as a student, I realized I too wanted to help more horse lovers understand horses. But I knew I wanted to teach humans in a different way. We know that with teaching horses no real learning is taking place when fear is present. So why don’t many Instructors also understand that when teaching people!? When we are afraid or scared we do not absorb the information we need to and we sure as heck do not operate well when terrified and neither do our horses. As I became more skilled and was able to offer my services at the professional level I told myself that I would never deliver hard truths to my students without giving them the appropriate level of support as a learner. 6 years ago I begin taking riding lessons. It was the childhood dream that I finally started as an adult. For me horses are the best therpy and little by little I grow. Some days are better then others and I've had a ton of pause moments since starting while I've carried and pop out babies. I was determined, horses are one of the few things I never gave up on. I realize that I give up on a lot of things easily. But my horse dream I continued watering. And wow now I have my own horses, it's wild. Such a blessing I don't take for granted. I guess I'm posing this because I hope this encourages someone that it's never too late to get into a passion that's been calling you. Even if you have to fit it in tiny slivers when you can. You will regret not making the time for it or saving up for it. All depends on what we prioritize. For example when I was a hairdresser, I would save all my tip money and never put things in CC and I was always able to scrounge up enough money to backpacking somewhere inspiring . Because the thought of travel was also something I never gave up on. & That eventually led me to start my nonprofit @canupicturethis !!! It's a random, yet not random destination I've been taken to on my earth journey. I'm thankful I have the ability to connected with horses in my lifetime. I never let that dream die and it came true. So this is a reminder to me and all y'all to keep pursuing that dream. Please don't get discouraged when it's put on pause, it doesn't mean it's not going to happen. Partner with divine timing and all things are possible.

Picture this: Your horse who used to be stiff and pacey is now a joy to ride and moves beautifully, without doing any long lasting or complicated training✨ This might sound too good to be true but it’s not difficult to get this result when we know what causes the stiffness and lack of motivation Which very often is the horse not wanting to leave the stable and constantly thinking about going home A mindset that affects the way they move Something we discovered when training our children’s horse Once we solved the barn sour he started moving and behaving better Before we solved the actual cause it didn’t matter how many serpentines or riding classes we attended he was still stuck in pace Because solving barn sour isn’t something that’s taught when taking riding lessons or doing more exercises will fix If you suspect your horse is barn sour comment YES and get instant access to free training showing exactly what we did to transform our horse from stiff and pacey to soft and fun ✨ So that your horse feels motivated and move better from self🐴 Comment YES below to get the link on DM👇

As a kid I loved seeing @thesmithtownhunt gather on our lawn. With 5 brothers and sisters, riding lessons were not an option for me until I got a job and could pay for lessons myself. But I always hoped one day I could ride in a hunt. This week--dream came true, thanks to perfect Virginia weather, my girlfriend Anusha and her friends @olddominionhounds in Virginia. Especially Betsy Parker who led the third field and Kevin who I basically just followed and did what ever he did (I guess we're jumping!) and Dana who generously loaned me her beautiful (and very chill and experienced!) horse to ride. Thank you for making my 58th birthday gift to myself actually happen. Since I fully agree with @jesseitzler who plots out life with one big annual event, six annual adventures and lots of habits to be gained (check out his instagram if you don't know his philosophy on this), I am now plotting my Big Thing for 2025! Thank you to all who made this happen. When do we get to go again???
