We have to wait until the soil conditions are the right moisture and temperature to do this 👍

To leave as few root remnants in the soil as possible, the rootstock, along with its roots, is grasped with a grabber, the soil is shaken off, and then the rootstocks are removed from the site.

CHRootstocks in apples… from what I know, originally developed commercially out of the East Malling project in England primarily focused on growing smaller trees (dwarfing). Dwarfing is such an important part of modern orchards. Traditional trees and/or orchards planted on their own roots (sometimes called seedling) would grow quite large and need to be planted very far apart. The big branches supported the fruiting wood and fruit. With the introduction of dwarfing rootstocks came smaller trees. Smaller trees mean smaller branches, smaller branches mean more fruiting wood. Then plant more trees close together and let the trellis support the trees and potentially triple your yield.
The orchard I’m standing in is a great example of a modern high density planting. Lots of trees close together with lots of small fruiting wood. And in Italy most the posts are made of long lasting “post tension” concrete. Quite impressive. This also brings with it efficiencies on jobs like pruning, thinning and picking.
Fast forward to the 1970’s and enter Cornell’s (Geneva, NY) work on rootstocks. After trips to Asia to gather wild plant material and 30+ years of work, rootstocks with disease and insect resistance plus different sizing enter the picture. The East Malling rootstocks are still used today and the Cornell rootstocks are making their way around the world into modern orchards.
Rootstocks have enabled a great change in apples. One that enables greater efficiencies. Couple that with everyone eating more apples and it’s a match made in heaven.
