I’m standing outside Wax Chandlers Hall on Gresham Street looking at this fantastic punched, or point worked, granite at lower level. This is deliberate rustication, not weathering. The face has been systematically punched to give depth and shadow, while the stones themselves are still carefully cut ashlar. The granite is light coloured, fine and very evenly grained, with no obvious feldspar phenocrysts, which makes a Cornish source very likely, possibly De Lank or a similar Bodmin Moor granite that takes this kind of aggressive dressing extremely well. The rustication is used to give weight and authority at street level, and you can see how it is carried through the quoins, where the stone blocks are emphasised even more strongly at the corners. Above this, the finish becomes progressively calmer and more refined, which is classic late nineteenth century civic stonework. What makes this even more interesting is to look straight across the street at Goldsmiths Hall. The granite there is much more obviously porphyritic, with large feldspar crystals standing out clearly in the surface. That points away from Cornwall and much more towards a Devon source.
