THSanta was not always red.
Before Coca-Cola, Santa Claus had no fixed identity. In the 1800s, he appeared in green, brown, blue, even tan robes. Sometimes thin, sometimes tall. Sometimes joyful, sometimes frightening. In many places he looked like a European bishop. In others, a woodland spirit. Every culture imagined him differently. Santa was a loose myth, not a global character.
Then came the 1930s. Coca-Cola had a serious business problem. People saw Coke as a summer drink. A cold soda in winter made no emotional sense. Sales dropped every winter. They needed warmth, family, and a reason to drink Coke in December. Instead of creating a new mascot, they hijacked an existing one.
In 1931, Coca-Cola hired illustrator Haddon Sundblom. The brief was simple. Make Santa warm, friendly, human, and lovable. Dress him in Coca-Cola red. Show him enjoying Coke naturally. Sundblom based Santa on the poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” and even modeled him after his elderly neighbor.
This Santa worked because of psychology. He was fat, joyful, grandfatherly, safe, and trustworthy. Coca-Cola repeated this image everywhere. Billboards, magazines, store displays, calendars, trucks, holiday packaging. Globally. For decades.
By the 1950s, other Santas vanished. Repetition turned advertising into memory. Coca-Cola never said they changed Santa. They let the world assume he was always this way.
They did not invent red Santa. They standardized him. And froze a myth forever.
If a brand can rewrite Santa Claus, imagine what else has been rewritten without you noticing.
