Help save the forests 🌳🌳 Sorry to be the bearer of more bad public lands news, but our forests are seriously at risk. Last week, the U.S. Forest Service announced major changes: - They’re closing 57 of 77 research stations, which studies how wildfires, climate changes, and pests have impacts on our forests. Many of these research facilities were conducting long term studies. - They’re shutting down all 9 regional offices that manage 154 forests! - And they’re moving their headquarters from Washington D.C. to Salt Lake City The U.S. Forest Service manages 193 million acres of National Forest and their research is pivotal to our forests and the impact of climate change. Many studies will be disrupted and forest members will leave their jobs all while damage from wildfires and climate change continues to worsen. These changes will put these landscapes, the wildlife, and all of us at risk. Did you know there are invisible “rivers” in the sky?! Believe it or not, forests (especially tropical rainforests!) are the engineers behind this. When trees pull moisture from the soil and release it into the atmosphere (a super cool process called transpiration), they can create rainfall hundreds or even thousands of miles away. But as deforestation accelerates, those forest-made sky rivers are drying up. And that’s bad news for weather, water, and lives everywhere. This is just one more reason (of many!) why we need to save our forests. But I'm grateful that people like the Elders for Ancient Trees haven't stopped working to protect BC's biodiversity for our children, our grandchildren, and generations to come. BC began as a resource colony, and it's long past time to change our relationship to this land. I made a song to help get the word out. 😍🌲 The USDA has announced its intent to rescind the 2001 Roadless Rule, putting nearly 59 million acres of wild national forests at risk across all states. Many many many of our favorite places will be effected from Idaho to Colorado to Alaska! These irreplaceable lands provide clean air, water, vital wildlife habitat, and incredible recreation. remind those who read the comments that adding new roads statistically brings more of the stuff we don’t want to proceed Wilderness for example, invasive species, trash, river and water, contamination, etc. ACTION: Share this post and send your concerns to your elected officials using the link in my bio. The government is dismantling the US Forest Service. The are closing the regional offices and most research centers. They are moving the headquarters to SLC Utah, home of the cockroach that refuses to slink off and die Mike Lee who continually comes up with new proposals to steal or decimate our public lands every day. Every action they are taking will result in permanent destruction and harm. If you haven’t already, please write or call your reps. We cannot take the pressure off.
