Sir András said that he imagines this movement as being drawn straight from Winterreise: the steady tread of footsteps, measured yet inexorable, carrying a lone voice through memory and loss. Few pieces of chamber music transform motion into metaphor with such inevitability. Indeed, it is easy to imagine a singer entering instead of the two string instruments. Recorded live at the Seoul Arts Center in 2014, this performance brings together the legendary Korean violinist Kyung Wha Chung, cellist Sung-Won Yang, and pianist Kevin Kenner. They are tackling the haunting Andante con moto from Franz Schubert’s Piano Trio in E-flat Major, D. 929. The movement opens with one of the most sublime cello melodies ever written—a tune that feels like a melancholic walk through a misty forest. You may have heard it in Kubrick's Barry Lyndon (1975) which won the Oscar for best music score. Franz Schubert (1797–1828) wrote this trio in November 1827, just one year before his death at age 31. He never lived to hear its public premiere. Contrary to the popular belief that Schubert was a starving artist with no reputation, he actually modeled this iconic cello theme on a Swedish folk song he heard performed by a traveling troupe. The song, called “See the Sun Sink,” provided the perfect emotional anchor for his own feelings of mortality. In the middle of this Andante con moto (walking pace with motion), the sunny melody is abruptly shattered by a violent, tragic outburst—a “sudden fright” that represents the encroaching darkness of Schubert’s illness. When the cello melody returns, it is broken, haunted, and deeply moving. No wonder why Yang’s bel canto is so vocal, he phrases the notes like a lied, allowing the melody to breathe. The former Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris student is paired with two forces of nature: violinist Kyung Wha Chung, one of the first Korean musicians to achieve true global superstardom in the 1970s, and the refined touch of American pianist Kevin Kenner (prize winner of the Chopin Competitions).
