In the setup, babies were placed on a platform covered with thick glass. On one side, a patterned surface was placed directly under the glass, while on the other side the pattern was placed much lower, creating the illusion of a sudden drop.
Even though the glass made the surface completely safe, many crawling infants refused to move across the “deep” side. Instead, they stopped, reached out cautiously, or looked back toward their parents for reassurance.
The experiment showed that by the time babies begin crawling, they already have a surprisingly developed sense of depth perception.
It also suggested that the hesitation around heights may be an early survival instinct, helping humans avoid dangerous drops long before they fully understand the concept of height.
