YOUR TONGUE SHOULD REST IN YOUR PALATE. If your tongue doesn’t it’s lost its muscle strength. A weak and floppy tongue won’t get you far. Most ppl don’t know that the tongue NEEDS to be suctioned lightly up when you aren’t using it and this should naturally happen from infancy on. There are some factors that can make someone’s tongue lose its strength and rest low and or forward. Because it’s not a well known concept, most ppl won’t go to their doctor and say “hey ! My tongue is floppy!” What typically happens , even as early as infancy are issues that have to do with the tongues function. Some symptoms of a weak tongue - 🚨Sleeping problems 🚨snoring 🚨wetting bed and or waking up to pee 🚨jaw pain 🚨avoiding heavier , denser textures of food 🚨choking on food, pills 🚨speech sound difficulty 🚨constipation and or bloating 🚨acid reflux 🚨clenching 🚨tension headaches, shoulder and neck pain 🚨pelvic floor issues 🚨chronic congestion, allergies 🚨facial asymmetry To name a few. What does it mean? ✔️ Low tongue posture (tongue resting on the floor of your mouth and pushing against bottom teeth) ✔️ Tongue thrust or oral muscle imbalance ✔️ Mouth breathing ✔️ Clenching or grinding ✔️ Sometimes airway restriction (tongue resting is up, but palate is narrow, so not enough space for the tongue). Your tongue should rest gently on the roof of your mouth — not pushing into your teeth all day. When it doesn’t, those scalloped borders can show up as a clue. It’s not just a “tongue thing” — it can be connected to breathing, sleep, jaw tension, and overall oral function. If you couldn’t: • Put your tongue to the “spot” and open wide • Or use your tongue to clean all surfaces of your teeth …there’s a good chance your tongue doesn’t have the freedom it’s supposed to. And that might matters way more than you think. A restricted tongue can contribute to: • Head and neck tension • Teeth grinding or clenching • Headaches or jaw pain • Mouth breathing • Poor resting tongue posture • Crowding, narrow arches, or bite issues • Even obstructed breathing during sleep And here’s a piece most people never hear: Your tongue is a natural self-cleaning mechanism for your mouth. If it can’t sweep food off the teeth well, bacteria get a longer buffet… which can absolutely increase cavity risk over time. Your tongue is supposed to be the natural support system for your jaw, airway, and oral health. When it can’t move well, everything else compensates (ie all the muscles around it) This is where a myofunctional therapist and airway-focused dentist can be incredibly helpful. They don’t just look at teeth — they evaluate how the tongue, muscles, breathing, and airway are all working together. If either of those tests felt hard, frustrating, or impossible… it might be worth exploring.
