Fermat’s theorem The connection between local extrema (maximum and minimum points) of a function and its derivative is captured by Fermat’s theorem, which states that at any local extremum, the derivative of the function is zero. This means that the slope of the tanget line at these points is horizontal that is, zero. While a zero derivative is necessary for a local extremum, it’s not always sufficient; further analysis, often using the first or second derivative tests, is required to confirm whether the extremum is a maximum or a minimum. #math #mathematics #calculus

A lot of students get tripped up on this one when they start checking concavity because the function looks simple, but the second derivative tells a bigger story. Our Calc 1 panic problem today is: find the intervals of concavity for f(x) = ln(x^2 + 1). Put your answer in the comments and see if you can catch the full pattern before the solution drops.
