Boulez playing Boulez. The 12 Notations for piano (1945) were his first published work, he was 20. This Notation I, Fantasque – Modéré. Pierre Boulez passed away on this day in 2016. The French composer, well-versed in dodecaphony à la Schoenberg then serialism à la Weber and finally aleatoric music was also a great conductor. And I think his tenures at the BBC Symphony and New York Philharmonic have done more for his memory than his compositions which are not audience friendly. Fun fact: he won 26 Grammy Awards, which is more than Michael Jackson, Kanye West or U2. Besides Honegger, the first great and lasting influence on Boulez was Messiaen, his teacher at the Paris Conservatory. He was already quite the unorthodox fellow as he got kicked out of the fugue class of Plé-Caussade who was too boring for him. In Messiaen’s class, he obtained the First Prize in harmony. His second influence was Leibowitz introduced him to dodecaphony he was yearning for more freedom, whence his research in serialism and later his adoption of aleatory music. But right after WW2, it was difficult for Boulez to make a name for himself so he created Le Domaine musical to popularize contemporary music, to show that to be appreciated it needed to be played well, not just played. In the 1960s, he focused more on conducting, that’s how he got famous: he conducted Stravinsky (who praised him), Wagner, Ravel, Debussy and others with much success. In the 1970s, the French system of subsidies galore helped him to have his own initiatives and institutions (IRCAM chiefly) as the pope of contemporary music in the country, with the ambition to export it abroad as the pinnacle of a new era where electronic music and acoustic music merged together could be considered « serious music ». This week I wrote something that’s a bit like the sort of thing I used to write for my PhD portfolio. Essentially I would often start like this, with really dense, colourful chords that are a bit of a nod to Messaien perhaps, and then I’d take these ideas and expand them. The chords here work mainly because of the approach to voicing and voice leading. There’s obviously no sense of unifying key, but the voiceleading means it makes sense (I think!). The chords expand outwards and then contract inwards. There is a top line I suppose that you could call a melody, but whether you hear this in that way isn’t obvious. For the harmony geeks out there, the last two chords use all 12 semitones. The reconstruction gives rise to localized centers of tonal gravity, offering fleeting moments of familiarity that shift at a slower pace, yet with wider intervallic leaps. Musical phrases are like roller coasters that should take the listener along their paths. The practice is meant to allow for more variety in these paths for the improviser (and composer). Of course, always good as a simple fingering exercise. “Hunting” – Ali Arshi Style: Twelve-Tone (Dodecaphonic) Hunting is composed using twelve-tone technique and structured around a matrix derived from an original tone row. The piece begins with harmonic and melodic material based on P0, followed by a transition to R1 (the retrograde of the row), performed in unison by the flute and clarinet. In the next section, an ostinato based on P9 is introduced in the flute and further developed by the clarinet with expanded phrasing. The third section features a new ostinato based on P2, constructed using sixteenth-note (dotted semi-quaver) rhythms in both flute and clarinet. The piece concludes with a final phrase in the flute on P2, supported harmonically by piano chords derived from the same row. The composition employs various twelve-tone row forms, including Prime (P), Retrograde (R), and transposed versions, to explore motivic transformation, contrapuntal tension, and rhythmic design within a tightly constructed serial framework. Hunting video was recorded by me at 25/8 artspace, Harvard Square, during Tristan Calvo-Studdy’s 2024 video installation The Lynch Puppets. رویکرد ساختاری: دوازده‌ نتی (دودکافونیک) قطعهٔ «Hunting» با بهره‌گیری از تکنیک دوازده‌ نتی ساخته شده و ساختار آن بر پایه‌ی یک ماتریکسِ مشتق‌شده از سری تونال اصلی شکل گرفته است. اثر با هارمونی‌ها و ملودی‌هایی مبتنی بر فرم P0 آغاز می‌شود و سپس با گذار به R1 (بازگشت سری)، که به‌صورت یونیسون توسط فلوت و کلارینت اجرا می‌شود، ادامه می‌یابد. در بخش بعد، اُستیناتویی بر اساس فرم P9 در فلوت معرفی می‌شود که با عبارت‌هایی توسعه‌یافته در کلارینت گسترش پیدا می‌کند. در سومین بخش، فرم P2 منجر به ایجاد یک اُستیناتوی دولاچنگی بین فلوت و کلارینت می‌شود. قطعه با جمله‌ی نهایی فلوت بر پایه‌ی P2 و همراهی آکوردهای پیانو برگرفته از همان سری به پایان می‌رسد. این قطعه با استفاده از تغییرات مختلف سری دوازده‌نتی شامل Prime (P)، Retrograde (R) و فرم‌های انتقال‌یافته به شکلی فشرده و هدفمند، به کاوش در تحول موتیف‌ها، تنش‌های کنترپوانتیک، و الگوهای ریتمیک می‌پردازد. ویدئو، در فضای نصب‌شدهٔ «The Lynch Puppets» اثر تریستان کالوو-استادی (۲۰۲۴) در گالری 25/8 در هاروارد اسکوئر ضبط شده است. #Dodecaphonic #ContemporaryComposition #Serialism #ModernMusic #ExperimentalMusic

Today we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Pierre Boulez (1925-2016), one of the most important musical figures of the 20th century. It will remain a matter of deep regret to me that I haven’t had the chance to meet Boulez in person while he was alive. But I had the joy to play several of his pieces for solo piano during the past years, especially the First Sonata (1946) and Incises (2001). In January 2016, just a few days after Boulez’s passing away, I decided to dedicate an encore to his memory during a recital at the @fondationlv in Paris. Here is an extract of the First Sonata, where one can recognize the decisive influence of the Second Viennese School as well as a vehement lyricism typical of the composer’s early language.
