For Frankenstein, he worked closely with costume designer Kate Hawley (@katehawleycostume) and production designer Tamara Deverell (@tamdev) to ensure nothing was decorative for its own sake. Del Toro has been vocal about his insistence on practical sets over digital ones, demanding real stonework, real materials, real weight. The philosophy is straightforward: if it’s in the frame, it has to mean something.

In Playtime (1967), Jacques Tati places characters inside rigid, uniform modern spaces so when someone behaves or moves differently, they immediately draw the viewer’s attention. Costume design can do the same thing, like in The Intouchables (2011), where Driss enters a room full of formally dressed applicants but is the only one wearing sneakers and casual clothes, instantly separating him from the rest. Even hair design can isolate a character, as seen in Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013), where Emma’s bright blue hair makes her stand out in almost every scene she appears in.
