Shaquille O’Neal wasn’t just dominant — he was physically overwhelming in a way the league had never really seen.
At his peak, Shaq combined massive size with shocking agility, turning the paint into his personal territory. Defenders knew what was coming and still couldn’t stop it. Drop steps, power dunks, and deep seals became automatic points, especially during his early-2000s run where he powered the Lakers to three straight championships and three straight Finals MVPs.
What made Shaq truly different was the pressure he put on entire defenses. Teams had to double early, triple late, and even then he often finished through contact. Few players in NBA history have forced opponents to completely reshape their game plan the way he did.

CAShaquille O’Neal sometimes can be boxed in as a guy who didn’t have the same level of diverse value as other bigs in the NBA like your Hakeem’s and Tim Duncan’s, which is true to a degree. But Shaq’s actual gravity was something we’ve never seen before for a purely post-centric big man. This guy was legit insane in terms of attention-grabbing whenever a successful feed was made to the post.
I think the value of that gravitational presence can be overlooked with Shaq because it’s not as glamorous without the stellar shooting and shot-making that guy’s like Steph/Klay/Reggie brought with their gravity on the perimeter. But Shaq’s strength, balance and legit passing feel made his post-offence safe and unstoppable.
