BEIn time for Shark Week 2021, an annual tradition that airs on the Discovery Channel and is running from July 11-18 this year, we're spotlighting this incredible moment captured by @juansharks in Oahu, Hawaii. 🦈
"I know all the training and the conservation work I do for sharks lead us to this moment. Everything made sense, swimming next to the largest great white shark caught on video to show the peaceful side of sharks. An apex predator, yes, but far from the monster that media dramatizes. Was this safe? Yes, with the right training and knowledge. Replace the fear of sharks with factual information and respect for their role in our environment." 🙏🏼
In this superb footage, @oceanramsey swims in tandem with a great white shark, respectfully keeping her distance while placing her hand over the top of its pectoral (without touching)—helping overcome misconceptions about these often misunderstood marine animals.

ANIf you ever see a shark in the ocean, the worst thing you could do would be to run away from it. Running from a shark triggers a predatory response in them and makes them feel like you are prey. If you stand your ground, make eye contact, and remain calm, this will drastically reduce your chances of continuing to get approached by the shark. If you absolutely needed to as a last resort if the shark is too close, you can firmly place your hand on top of the shark’s head and guide them away from you. These are all tips in the case you unexpectedly encounter a shark while diving or snorkeling, please do not seek these types of interactions with sharks without a professional guide. *This video is done as a demonstration by a professional, please do not attempt*
