HOTo some people, what happened in the store might seem really minor. But it struck a chord in me.
When Remi shushed her, the lady got unnecessarily defensive and stared at Remi right in the eyes with an angry face. But there was something about situation that made me pause before just reacting back at this lady, to tell her that Remi didn't mean it in the way that she took it. I also didn't feel like this entire reasoning and conversation in general was necessary in a checkout line at Hobby Lobby.
The truth is, everyone processes things differently. The feelings I carry about my daughter’s future, the grief that sometimes comes with loving a child with Down syndrome, may not look the same as someone else’s. And that’s okay.
We’re all walking through life with different experiences, different worries, different things on our hearts.
That’s why I keep coming back to this reminder: show grace. Because we rarely know where someone else is in their story or what they might be carrying that day.
And if you ever see a moment like this happening in public, the best thing you can do is simply be kind to the mom. I can’t even explain the feeling of suddenly feeling like there’s a spotlight on you and everyone is staring.
Sometimes it’s as simple as saying, “She’s beautiful.” Or laughing and saying, “Toddlers are spicy.” Or “That’s just toddlers, you’re doing great.”
Little moments of kindness can completely change how a hard moment feels. Yesterday I would have given anything for someone to just make it lighter and remind me we’re all figuring this parenting/ inclusivity thing out together.
