This is how the brain actually stores words for long term use. 🧠This process is called orthographic mapping. It means linking the sounds in a word to the letters that spell those sounds and storing that connection permanently. When kids map words this way, they do not have to guess or rely on rote memory. 🌈The result is real word recognition, stronger decoding, and confidence that lasts. SIGHT WORD CHALLENGE! It’s almost like musical chairs but with books. We did three rounds! It’s also been a way to incorporate our library books more often and more intentionally. We usually visit the library once a week but I noticed we didn’t have a lot of time or opportunity to read and enjoy our books! Also, at the kindergarten level, many kids aren’t fully reading yet. So this idea combined high frequency word practice AND books! Perfect combo. I’ve put together a list of over 300 sight words (Fry and high-frequency) up to 3rd grade—perfect for building a strong foundation. Pair them with flashcards that use each word in a sentence to make reading smoother and more natural. Comment “NEW” to get a link to the list as well as flashcards. Let’s help kids read with confidence, one word at a time! With help of phonics skills, you can teach your little one to decode words into recognizable sounds. For instance, If your child knows only letter and short vowel sounds, then he/she can decode 46 or 14% words. By adding digraphs to the list, a total of 75 words or 23% words can be decoded. We teach them how the code works. 🔤 The th digraph is a perfect example. It makes TWO sounds: /th/ like thumb and /th/ like this. When we explicitly teach the pattern, practice it, and apply it in real words, kids don’t have to guess or memorize — they can actually READ. Here we re-used the same sight word craft sticks from our other sight word activity. Then added in pipe cleaners & letter beads! Turn them into bracelets, trade them with friends or simply slide the beads off when you’re done & start again! Beads are a choking hazard.
