More info in caption! ⬇️ If you are using silk thread for your bead knotting project, it is best practice to stretch the silk before using it! 🧵 With regular wear, the knots in your necklace will tighten and get smaller, and the sections of thread between knots will also stretch out. The process will happen faster if you do not prep your thread before using it. It is also helpful to stretch the thread out because it gets rid of all the kinks and bends. It is much easier to work with smooth and straight thread. There are other ways to stretch your thread. I have heard about using small fishing weights and hanging their thread to dry with one attached at the bottom. Silk extracted from moths is relatively common. Silk can be classified based on the type of moth as domesticated silk and wild silk. #Mulberry silk is a domesticated silk and it accounts for the bulk of global silk production. It is produced by the Bombyx mori moth, which feeds exclusively on mulberry leaves. Most well known silk sarees are made from mulberry silk. These include Banarasi, Kanchipuram, Paithani, Gadwal, and Baluchari sarees. #Wild silk comes from moths that are not fully domesticated. There are three main types of wild silk. These are Tussar, Muga, and Eri. #Tussar silk is produced by moths from the Antheraea family. It has a natural golden beige tone and an earthy textured feel. #Muga silk is produced by the Antheraea assamensis moth and is native to Assam. It is the most expensive variety of silk in the world that is produced by the silk moth. Authentic Muga silk should be accompanied by a laboratory test certificate to verify its purity. #Eri silk is produced by the Samia cynthia moth. It is also known as peace silk because the cocoon is not boiled with the silkworm inside. This makes it cruelty free and it is preferred by Buddhist monks.
