THOne of my biggest worries as a Muslim revert has always been — what happens when I die?
Who’s going to make sure I have an Islamic burial if I’m the only Muslim in my family?
And even deeper — who’s going to make sure my wealth is divided according to the Quran and make sure it doesn’t go through the non-Muslim court system?
Islam teaches us that our lives — and our wealth — are a trust from Allah ﷻ.
It is prescribed for you, when death approaches any of you, if he leaves wealth, that he make a bequest for parents and near relatives according to what is acceptable — a duty upon the righteous. 🕊️ surah Al-Baqarah 2:180
As reverts, many of us forget or just don’t know that we can’t leave everything to our non-Muslim family — the Prophet ﷺ said:
A Muslim cannot inherit from a non-Muslim, and a non-Muslim cannot inherit from a Muslim. (Sahih Muslim)
So Islam gives us a solution:
we can give up to 1/3 of our wealth to whoever we choose (including non-Muslim relatives) and the remaining 2/3 must go to Muslim heirs or into sadaqah if we have none.
So for me as a single Muslim, I reached out to a lawyer who specializes in Islamic estate planning and made my Islamic will — so that my burial, my wealth, and my legacy are handled in a halal way per the Quran. 🤲🏼✨
Because if I don’t, the government decides for me through something called probate — a legal process where the court distributes your belongings, often taking months, costing thousands, and not following Shariah rules.
Don’t wait until death to plan for your death!🕊
