FEIt was one of those “Wait… that’s actually a real sport?” sports. Ski ballet combined downhill skiing with dance, gymnastics, and figure-skating–style choreography, creating something wholly unexpected and wildly expressive.
The sport peaked in the 1980s and early ’90s, and while it was never an official Olympic medal event, ski ballet was featured as a demonstration sport at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics. However, it was eventually phased out, largely because its artistry made judging too subjective to standardize and score consistently.
Still, it was a totally unique sport that prioritized expression and performance.
