Why “Knees to Shoulders” Changes the Lift between Navasana in the Ashtanga Primary Series If your knees are pulling into your chest in Navasana, lifting into Tolasana can feel almost impossible. Instead, draw the knees toward the shoulders. This small shift: • Opens the hips • Reduces overworking the hip flexors • Creates the compression needed to lift When the knees move wider and higher toward the shoulders, the pelvis can tuck, the spine can round, and suddenly the lift becomes much more accessible. It’s a subtle setup change—but it can completely change your Navasana → Tolasana transition. Save this for your next Primary Series practice.

In poses like Upward Facing Dog and Purvottanasana, it’s common to naturally hyperextend and lock out the elbows to open the chest. In this tutorial, we show how to approach these postures in a way that distributes the work evenly throughout the body—helping to avoid common pain, misalignment, and compensation patterns.

My chaturanga dandasana is NOT perfect at all. Watching these videos shows me where I can improve my alignment like my glutes and my head. However doing these drills has changed my practice immensely while keeping my shoulders, elbows, and wrists safe. Before doing these drills my elbows would fall back causing wrist, shoulder, and elbow pain. Especially after a Vinyasa class with lots of Vinyasas and Sun salutations! I hope this drill helps you the way it helped me and please leave any questions you may have in the comments or DM me! Work on your abdominal, and arm muscles to help with strength. 3. Starting on your knees does not mean you’re weak. It means you care about your alignment, wanting to keep things safe while working on your strength! (I still go on my knees after I do lots of these and my arms start to hurt creating a weaker form). 4. Practice and play it’s not that serious!! However alignment matters ✨

Any other Agnistambhasana fans out here? (fire log seat in Sanskrit 🔥🪵) I think it’s one of my favorite asanas of all time - ideal for deep hip opening, releasing outer-thigh tension, and creating more space in the lower back. It’s also such a grounding seat to slow the breath and settle the mind. Whether you’re unwinding from long hours of sitting, balancing out running/cycling/hiking, or preparing your body for meditation, this pose is for you! And there are always variations if your hips are a bit tight: props, elevation, and legs variations can make it accessible for every body. I’ll be happy to guide you through it in my Jivamukti classes. I hope to see you on the mat very soon 😊
