The Deacons for Defense and Justice formed in 1964 when Black communities in Louisiana faced violent intimidation from the Ku Klux Klan. When protection wasn’t provided, they stepped up guarding meetings, escorting organizers, and defending neighborhoods so nonviolent organizing could continue. Little known fact: The Deacons were largely disciplined military veterans who carefully screened members and followed strict rules. Their presence alone helped stop Klan violence in entire towns.
