GRSoil Levels Low? That’s Good News!
If your soil level has dropped, it means the organic matter is doing its job—breaking down and feeding your crops.
But now it’s time to fill those beds back up:
For empty spots: Pull back the mulch and add fresh worm castings, compost, and raised bed mix (I love the one from @azwormfarm ). Super simple.
If plants are still growing: Just spread compost and worm castings over the mulch, then give it a deep watering to soak in those nutrients.

The lower it is, the easier it is to spread, and better results. Consider scalping as low as your mower goes prior to doing this.

This pairs well with a good aeration prior to- especially if you have compact clay soil.

No, I do not know where to rent a machine near you (unfortunately). This is an Ecolawn 250, or there is an Earth and Turf brand. Both will help immensely. Call around.

I use 1 yard of sand for every 1,000 sqft of lawn to calculate sand needed. This is to cover the whole lawn. If you’re doing spots, just get a yard or 2

Do this when your lawn is actively growing. While you can almost do this at anytime of the year, it’s best to do it when grass will recover the quickest.

If you live in the northern, cooler climates, a soil/sand mixture would be best suited since you’re more than likely going to seed as well. This is Bermuda, so different grass type than you- we skip the seeding!.. Hope this helps ⛳️

THSand is often used to level lawns because it spreads easily
but ease isn’t the same as effectiveness.
Sand contains almost no nutrients.
Over time, mixing it into your soil dilutes organic matter, increases drainage too much, and leaves grass struggling to stay healthy.
That’s why lawns leveled with sand often look good at first…
then thin out, yellow, or stop thriving altogether.
Topsoil works differently.
It fills low spots and feeds the lawn at the same time, supporting root growth instead of starving it.
Leveling should improve your lawn not weaken it.
If the goal is long-term health, always think about what you’re adding to the soil, not just how flat it looks.

Compost is great for adding natural fertilizer, increasing organic matter in new construction or established lawns and much more.
Sand is great for leveling, decreasing the “density” of soil and allowing for more drainage. There is no nutritional value of sand.
