Comparing how cities are seen, not just how they are planned using isovist movement patterns across three fundamentally different urban logics: 1. San Francisco represents the planned grid shaped by topography, where long sightlines and predictability guide movement. 2. Paris reflects axial and monumental planning, where visibility is deliberately orchestrated through boulevards and vistas. 3.Old Delhi reveals an organic, pre modern fabric, where short visual depth, enclosure, and cultural routines drive intense pedestrian movement. By reading cities through isovists, we begin to understand how visibility, enclosure, and orientation influence everyday movement beyond maps and masterplans. Urban form is not only built space, it is also visual experience. Visibility shapes behavior. Movement follows what we can see. #urbanmorphology #isovistanalysis #urbandesign #spatialanalysis #cities

This diagram illustrates an urban design principle featuring several open perimeter blocks, a hybrid form that combines traditional street definition with modern access and green space ideals. The layout emphasizes connectivity and air/light flow, which are common considerations in sustainable urban planning. Key Features of the Diagram Building Arrangement: The diagram shows four main city blocks, each formed by several L-shaped and rectilinear buildings that partially enclose a central courtyard or open space. Connectivity and Movement: Large, bold orange arrows indicate major axes of movement or desired flow through and around the blocks, suggesting a focus on permeability for pedestrians, wind, or views. Smaller dashed arrows reinforce access and flow through secondary pathways and open corners. Green Spaces: The diagram incorporates internal courtyards and small green areas surrounding the buildings, highlighting the integration of landscape and public/semi-private open spaces. Purpose: This type of layout promotes natural lighting and ventilation by strategically positioning openings in the building perimeters, creating a more pedestrian-friendly and potentially more sustainable urban environment. . . . #urbandesignlab #urbanplanning #sustainabledesign #architecture #cities

In 1969, urban designer Donald Appleyard conducted a groundbreaking study in San Francisco that forever changed how we view city planning. By comparing three identical streets with varying traffic levels—light, moderate, and heavy—he visualized the "invisible" social cost of the automobile. The results were stark: on the "Light Traffic" street, residents had three times as many friends and double the acquaintances compared to those on the "Heavy Traffic" street. As cars claimed more space, the "home territory" of residents literally shrank. People on busy streets retreated into the back of their homes, losing the spontaneous "meeting points" that form the bedrock of a community. Appleyard’s diagrams prove that streets aren't just conduits for moving tin; they are the living rooms of our society. When we prioritize speed over people, we don't just create traffic—we create isolation. #UrbanPlanning #LivableStreets #WalkableCities #CommunityFirst #CarFree Would you like me to create an image of a modern "Livable Street" based on Appleyard’s principles?

Every time I work on something like this I end up spending more time on the logic behind the layout than the layout itself. Which blocks get sunlight, movement hierarchies, how wide the streets actually need to be, where people would naturally walk. The system handles the generation indeed. But the decisions before that still take the longest. #computationaldesign #urbandesign #design #architecture

Your brain judges buildings instantly. In the 1980s, environmental psychologists Rachel and Stephen Kaplan mapped the hidden formula behind places people instinctively love. Coherence. Complexity. Legibility. Mystery. Get the balance right and a place feels magnetic. Get it wrong and people leave without knowing why. Most cities today forgot the last ingredient. Which place gets the balance right? #architecture #urbandesign #placemaking #environmentalpsychology #citydesign

To create impactful public space, we use hard data to establish design and planning strategies. For 110 acres of Manhattan, we needed to evaluate foot traffic during the Covid period and compare it with “normal” days. Using anonymous pedestrian data, the OSD team sorted almost 2 million data points and overlaid them on GIS & NYC open source data maps of the Flatiron / NoMad District, transforming this data into a time-lapse “heat map” of foot traffic patterns. From this analysis and community engagement with @pps_placemaking that followed, planning strategies emerged around using underutilized open space, creating safety, and relieving congestion around hot spots. As we collectively look to build public spaces that support pedestrians, this data-driven analysis is critical to supporting planning, funding, and design. While car data is widely available, pedestrian data is largely unmapped and therefore underrepresented. For those of you with keen vision, look closely for how Friday happy hours, the Pride March, and rush hour compared.
