One of the most common questions people asked me as a designer was – “how do I use color in my home?” Hi 👋 I’m Kathy – I designed homes for 10 years and share interior design advice and renter friendly ideas so you can make a home you LOVE 💕 Swipe right to join the tribe! Most people worry color will make their home feel chaotic or overwhelming. But the real issue isn’t the color itself — it’s that you’re fighting against the light. If you do this one thing, you’re going to change how you decorate forever. Before you choose a single color, open your compass app on your phone. Your room’s orientation changes EVERYTHING. North-facing rooms get cool, blue-toned light all day. South-facing rooms are bright and warm. East-facing gets harsh morning light but cools down by afternoon. West-facing is golden at sunset but darker in the morning. So here’s the trick: Think about when you use this room and how you want to feel in it. Let’s say your bedroom faces north and you want to wake up feeling energized. You’re already getting cool, flat light—so if you add a cool blue, it’ll feel hostile. Instead, lean into warm terracotta, peachy tones, or yellow-toned greens. This way you’re creating balance and your space will feel elevated not overwhelming. #interiordesign #interiordecor #rentalhome

But if you do this one thing, you’re going to nail it! 👇 Before you choose a single color, open your compass app on your phone. Your room’s orientation changes EVERYTHING. North-facing rooms get cool, blue-toned light all day. South-facing rooms are bright and warm. East-facing gets harsh morning light but cools down by afternoon. West-facing is golden at sunset but darker in the morning. And light greatly impacts how a color feels. So here’s the trick: Think about when you use this room and how you want to feel in it. In interior design, color is never just a surface choice. it’s the most powerful tool we have to shift perspective. From deep, moody tones that offer a sense of security to bright, airy shades that invite energy, the right hue can physically alter the dimensions of a space. As an Interior Designer in NYC, I specialize in finding that perfect balance where architecture meets emotion. This hallway transition shows just how much the “vibe” shifts with a single change in the spectrum. #InteriorDesignNYC #NYCDesigner #NYCDecor #HomeTransformation

60/30/10 — Here’s how it works: 60% – Your dominant color This is your foundation. Walls, large rugs, sofas, cabinetry. It sets the tone and gives the room its overall mood. 30% – Your secondary color Think curtains, accent chairs, bedding, or a painted island. This supports the main color and adds dimension. 10% – Your accent Pillows, art, lamps, a bold chair, a pop of pattern. It’s small but powerful. When rooms feel “off,” it’s usually because everything is fighting for 50%. Too many stars and not enough supporting roles. The 60/30/10 rule creates balance, contrast, and intention, without you overthinking every single decision. You can do this with moody tones, earthy palettes, even color-drenched spaces. If you’ve been scrolling through design inspiration lately, you’ve probably noticed rooms that feel completely wrapped in a single color—walls, trim, ceiling, even cabinetry all saturated in the same hue. That immersive look has a name: “color drenching.” And when done thoughtfully, it’s one of the most powerful tools for creating mood, character, and cohesion in a space. Read all about the color drenching trend in our latest blog post. Comment "COLOR" to get the link! #colordrenching #maximalism #maximalistdesign #interiordesignportland #interiordesigninspo

50 Shades of Blue For Project Emery Estate, a full-home residential interior design project, we experienced a first. The client asked for a color theme — blue in every space. We had creative freedom with shade selection and placement so we decided blue needed to hit the eye from floor to ceiling and at every level in between without feeling overwhelming. We emphasized blue inside the rooms and accented blue in the shared spaces. Shades of blacks and whites served as anchor colors, creating contrast and cohesion throughout the home. From furniture selections to dimensional tile, layered textiles, and styled decor, we incorporated blue in varied tones and textures to keep the palette dynamic, balanced, and livable. This is what intentional color layering looks like in a thoughtfully designed home. If you’re thinking about a color-forward space of your own, inquiries are open. In this video, Groovy Hues Painting walks you through a living room and kitchen repaint in Bella Vista, South Philadelphia, where harsh overhead and side lighting made color selection tricky. Lighting plays a huge role in how paint colors look. In homes with uneven lighting (skylights, spot fixtures, direct sun), avoid colors that are too cool or warm. Test neutrals at multiple times of day and pair them with the right sheen for consistency.
