CRVan Gogh is celebrated as one of history’s greatest artists. But he never knew it.
Starry Night hangs in museums, sells for millions, decorates dorm rooms across the world. It’s the painting everyone recognizes. But when Van Gogh created it in 1889, he was broken—mentally, physically, spiritually.
He had just mutilated his own ear and voluntarily admitted himself to an asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France. From his window, he painted the same landscape over and over. Twenty different versions. Obsessed with capturing something he couldn’t quite explain.
That glowing celestial body in the night sky? Venus. The morning star. We know this from letters he sent to his brother Theo, where he described his work in clinical, almost dismissive terms.
Van Gogh didn’t celebrate Starry Night. He lumped it together with other paintings he considered mediocre—work that “says nothing to me,” as he wrote. He later called it an outright failure.
He had a deeply spiritual relationship with death and the cosmos. In his letters, he compared stars to dots on a map—destinations we travel to after we die. Towns in the afterlife. Yet he insisted Starry Night wasn’t about religion. Just his view of existence.
Vincent van Gogh died in 1890, just over a year after painting Starry Night, believing he’d accomplished nothing of value.
Today, the painting is priceless.
