If test prep season makes your stomach drop, you’re not alone. And your students feel it too. Here’s the shift we’re making this year: we’re starting with confidence before we start with content. Because when kids believe they can do it, they show up differently. They try longer. They spiral less. They use the tools you teach. Our free Test Prep Made Easy email series kicks off with a classroom pep talk lesson (plus an anchor chart + student practice) to help students calm the nerves and change the self talk. Comment TEST PREP and we’ll send it your way. #standardizedtesting #testprep #staartest #lessonplans #testtakingstrategies #elementaryteacher

The best test prep is the work students do all year long! Three ways I embed test prep from day one: 1. Starting class with Bell Ringers: Bell ringers are the goat. Make them standards based, and they’re even better. Every bell ringer aligns to a standard. There are six levels of bell ringer per standard. The 5 minute skills practice to start class works as the perfect warm up AND meaningful prep for standardized testing that doesn’t sacrifice content. 2. Article of the Week: I will die on the article-of-the-week hill because they are by far the best practice I’ve implemented in my 25 years of teaching. Every Monday, students receive their article of the week. They complete it by Friday for homework. I give them feedback on their short response writing. By test time, short response writing is second nature. On the New York State exam in 7th grade, there are 5 short response questions and an essay. I tell my students to approach writing just like our AOWs and it takes all the pressure away. My kids feel confident and prepared which makes my teacher-heart so happy! 3. Write your own test questions: Help your students to be fluent in the testing genre. This is a practice I’ve held since day one of my teaching career–if you want kids to do well on standardized tests, put them in the shoes of test writers. Task students with writing a multiple choice question for their books or articles you read. Use a question from past standardized tests as a mentor text. Like any other mentor text, break it down with students: How are the questions written? What are the elements of a strong question? How are the correct answers written? How are the distractors written? Bell Ringers and my Article of the Week program are both in my TpT. That f*cking test is on its way and you’re starting to panic. Here’s what you’re going to do. 1. Take a deep breath. Recenter yourself in the truth that the test is inequitable and just f*cking dumb, the ask is impossible, and you/your students are more than test scores. 2. Make a plan - count up how many instructional days you have till test day and pick the most important skills you’d like to review. 3. Pick 1-2 skills to review per 1-2 days and mix up the ways. They don’t have to write an essay every day for 2 weeks to learn essay organization. They don’t need to practice with 50 multiple choice questions to practice question annotation and response strategies. 4. Plan something fun/a brain break. I know I know, it sounds a little counterintuitive, but it’s necessary. 5. Big up your kids, then let go and let God, whatever that means to you. Yes, you are a good teacher and your kids have still grown this year regardless of whatever happens on test day 💛 And if you’d love a pack of resources to help with the test prep/make it to break balance, comment “SANITY” for the purchase link to my favorite bundle of the school year 🔥 You got this, bayybeee ✨ . . #highschoolela #elateacher #secondaryela #englishteachers #teachertips

Test prep used to be the part of the year I dreaded the most. You know the feeling… You pull out the review packets, everyone groans a little, and the energy in the room just drops. The truth is, test prep itself isn’t the problem. It’s when it turns into worksheet after worksheet that students completely check out. So one year I tried something different. Instead of “Let’s review for the test,” I said: “Let’s see which team can win.” Suddenly students were debating answers, checking the text again, and trying to earn points for their teams. The room went from quiet compliance to actual engagement. Same skills. Same standards. Completely different energy. That’s why I created a March Madness style test prep freebie you can use with your class. Students review skills while competing in teams and earning points. If you want it, just comment MARCH and I’ll send it to you. Test prep doesn’t have to be boring. 😉 #elateacher #middleschool #testprep #competition #classroomengagement

Like other skills, being “a good test taker” includes a skill set that can be taught with strategies that help every student improve. To teach test taking skills without sacrificing content, I deliver three after school review sessions. At review sessions, I share strategies that help turn any student into a “good test taker.” One of my favorite, high-impact strategies for making students better understand the testing genre and find success on multiple choice is called the Bullseye Strategy. Here’s how it works: 🎯 Students do a close read of the multiple choice question. 🎯 Students read all four answer choices. 🎯 Students rate the answer choices according to a bullseye: 🎯FURTHEST BULLSEYE RING: An inference that is too far beyond the text—it’s true in real life, but not based on text evidence 🎯THIRD RING: A random detail that was in the text and is true, but does not directly address the question being asked. 🎯SECOND RING: A detail that is kind of right; it was in the text but is not the BEST answer. 🎯BULLSEYE: The correct inference that BEST answers the question and can be backed up with evidence from the text. Students can look back in the text and confirm this choice. I’ve used the Bullseye Strategy with my 7th graders for years. I love when I’m proctoring an exam and see little bullseyes drawn in the margin of their papers reminding them of the strategy!
