“They’re stealing our jobs.” Then where were all the people lining up to do this one? Because when it came to Ewen, there wasn’t a queue. There wasn’t a line of people willing to step into a life that is complex, intense, and at times frightening. That comment is thrown around so easily by people who have never stood where these incredible human beings have stood. There were people who tried to support Ewen. People who walked in… and walked back out. Because this kind of care asks more of you than most are willing to give. To care for someone with profound and complex needs, to walk into something that can feel overwhelming, unpredictable, and at times extremely frightening, yet stay anyway? That’s a job most can’t do & won’t. Many people walked through the door and realised they couldn’t do it. And that’s the reality of this kind of complex care. Every single person on Ewen’s support team has given him care, dignity, and a life that many thought wasn’t possible. When other people couldn’t, or wouldn’t… they showed up every single time. They chose to learn Ewen, not just manage him. They brought understanding where there was fear. They didn’t just do a job. They brought light into Ewen’s life. Safety, consistency, moments of joy, connection, and trust that most didn’t believe was possible. Many of them came here from Nigeria to do this work. And I’ll say this plainly. If they’re “stealing jobs”… why weren’t people fighting to do this one? Or the job that saves lives each night and day, the ones in care homes, nursing homes, respite homes? Because when it mattered, really mattered, this was humanity showed up. Who didn’t give up. And I will never let their work, or their impact, be reduced to ignorance in a comment section. To every one of you on Ewen’s phenomenal team, you know who you are. Whether you came hundreds of miles across the world or 10 miles down the road. Thank you, for saving my brother. If this is a job people think is being ‘taken’… they should ask why no one else stayed to do it. They didn’t take a job, they gave my brother a life.
