Thrift Stores 🇺🇸 vs. Charity Shops 🇬🇧 Here are my honest thoughts after traveling and strictly shopping at secondhand and vintage stores in the UK for two months! 🫡 1) STORE SIZES - oh my gosh one American thrift store could eat 10 UK charity shops whole. I never realized how insanely huge thrift stores compare to the tiny, very quaint sizes of charity shops. 2) THE SELECTION - there are more options in the US just due to the massive thrifting market, but even though charity shops are smaller, you still get a really good mix of true vintage, modern, and even sometimes designer! Especially really old vintage. 3) CHARITY vs. PROFIT - the thrift stores in the UK are all for charity, unless it’s a vintage ship of course. But in America, you have a lot of for-profit thrift stores that charge WAY too much for no reason?? It gives me peace of mind to buy from a charity shop, knowing that it will go to a good cause every time. 4) THE PRICING - it depends on the location! This is the same for both countries. If you’re thrifting and vintage shopping in Nashville or London, the price is higher, but if you’re in more rural areas, you’ll definitely find gems for CHEAP. I mean like, I found a 100% cotton vintage Burberry sweater for only £15 in a countryside town. You must thrift and vintage shop outside of London! 5) LESS TEMPTATION TO OVERCONSUME - I buy less in England than I do in America. Because the charity shops are smaller and have less to choose from, I found myself only leaving with one thing that I really need instead of a bag of clothes I didn’t really need. The scale is just more chill in the UK - less and more. And I like that better than having TOO many options at all times 🙈 All in all, both places have its pros and cons! The encouragement is to choose secondhand / vintage wherever you are ❤️
