THSub sandwiches are one of my favorite things to eat. I’ve made so many different variations of sub rolls and they are all great but since my husband and son went to jimmy johns, now I’m determined to try and mimic their bread. Not only to save money but I’m sure I can make it healthier, right? My son told me his sub sandwich that I made him with this bread is pretty close, but he might be just being nice.
This recipe is easy and pretty quick. I’m going to continue to tweak it but for now I had to share because it’s pretty delicious.
Recipe
1 cup warm water
1 tbsp sugar
2 1/4 tsp yeast
Mix and let it sit for a few minutes
In a separate bowl add:
2 3/4 cups flour (you’ll add a little more later on)
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp olive oil
Once yeast is foamy, add it to your flour mixture. Knead for a few minutes, add 1/4 cup more of flour. Knead until you have a slightly tacky dough ball. Oil your bowl and rub the oil around the dough. Cover and let sit for about an hour.
Once doubled, punch down and knead on your counter for a few minutes. Sprinkle with a little flour if it’s too sticky. Divide into 4 equal parts. Use a rolling pin to roll into a thin rectangle. Roll up tight, pinch seams together and place on a baking sheet with parchment paper. Cover and let them rise for about 30-40 minutes.
Bake at 375 degrees for 20 min. Brush tops with butter if you want.
