Truth & Reconciliation: Call to Action #3 We call upon all levels of government to fully implement Jordan’s Principle. Jordan's Principle is a child-first and needs-based principle used in Canada to ensure that First Nations children living on and off reserve have equitable access to all government funded public services. It holds that First Nations children should not be denied access to public services while governments fight over who should pay. In order to ensure substantive equality, this can also include services that are not ordinarily available to other children. According to the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society of Canada, the organization that hosts the Jordan's Principle campaign: Jordan’s Principle ensures that First Nations children can access all public services when they need them. Services need to be culturally-based and take into full account the historical disadvantage linked to colonization that many First Nations children live with. The government of first contact pays for the service and resolves jurisdictional/payment disputes later. ♦️Must Watch♦️ Advocate Ngcukaitobi reveals that there were 48 public submissions, and only 2 supported the VAT increase. More than 98% of the public submissions rejected the VAT increase. In his submissions, he points out that in the affidavit, the EFF alleged that the rights likely to be impacted are the rights to substantive equality, particularly for the poor, who stand to be hit the hardest by the unlawful hike. He further argues that the committee itself concluded that the proposed VAT increase, which would raise VAT to 16%, will have a detrimental impact on lower- and middle-income households and will exacerbate inequality and the cost of living due to its regressive nature. The committee also stated that most stakeholders strongly opposed the VAT hike, particularly because of the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Five hundred women from across Mexico gathered in the Chamber of Deputies for the National Meeting for Substantive Equality and Parity Democracy, organized jointly by @mx_diputados and @50mas1.mexico Legislators and civil society leaders came together with a shared purpose: to strengthen the women’s rights agenda and continue building a more inclusive and representative democracy in Mexico. Leaders including Ricardo Monreal Ávila, @kenialopezr and @mariaelena.orantes highlighted the urgency of consolidating women’s political participation and advancing substantive equality through legislative action and collective leadership. With voices from across the country and international chapters—including representation from Canada and the U.S. border region—the gathering presented 20 concrete proposals addressing key priorities such as parity democracy, the national care system, migrant women’s rights, girls’ access to education, restorative justice for victims of violence, and support for the mothers searching for the disappeared. The meeting reaffirmed a clear message: building a truly equal democracy requires organized women, strong alliances between institutions and civil society, and a global network of leadership committed to transforming the future.

पंजाब एवं हरियाणा हाईकोर्ट ने कहा कि दिव्यांग (PwD) उम्मीदवारों को चयन प्रक्रिया में छूट (relaxation) देना कोई दया नहीं बल्कि संवैधानिक जिम्मेदारी है। दिव्यांग उम्मीदवारों को चयन मानकों में छूट देना RPWD Act के तहत “reasonable accommodation” का हिस्सा है। यह संविधान के अनुच्छेद 14 और 16 का उल्लंघन नहीं, बल्कि वास्तविक समानता (substantive equality) को बढ़ावा देता है। कोर्ट ने कहा कि सभी को एक जैसा नियम लागू करना ही हमेशा समानता नहीं होता। दिव्यांग लोगों की परिस्थितियां अलग होती हैं, इसलिए उन्हें अवसर देने के लिए अलग व्यवस्था जरूरी है। हरियाणा सरकार को 2 हफ्ते में कमेटी बनाने का आदेश 4 हफ्ते में दिव्यांग उम्मीदवारों के लिए चयन में छूट के नियम तय करने को कहा पुराने मामलों को नए नियमों के अनुसार फिर से देखने का आदेश पंजाब, हरियाणा और चंडीगढ़ को भविष्य की भर्तियों में स्पष्ट निर्देश बनाने को कहा कोर्ट ने स्पष्ट कहा कि दिव्यांग उम्मीदवारों को छूट देना concession नहीं बल्कि उनका अधिकार है, ताकि उन्हें वास्तविक समान अवसर मिल सके।#HighCourtDecision #PwDRights #DivyangAdhikar #ReasonableAccommodation #ConstitutionalRights

The legal framework in many societies has evolved over time to address historical injustices, particularly against women and marginalized groups. However, in some cases, this has led to laws and policies that inadvertently create an imbalance, disadvantaging men. The principle of justice demands fairness for all, yet there are areas where men face systemic challenges and lack adequate redressal mechanisms. For instance, in matters of domestic violence or divorce, laws in some countries assume men to be perpetrators and women to be victims, often sidelining male experiences of abuse or false accusations. Family courts frequently award child custody to mothers, marginalizing the role of fathers and causing emotional and financial strain on men. Similarly, the misuse of laws related to dowry or sexual harassment can lead to baseless accusations, with severe consequences for the accused before any trial or investigation is completed. Men also face societal stigma when discussing issues like mental health, domestic abuse, or workplace harassment, which further exacerbates their struggles. The lack of gender-neutral laws in many areas reinforces these biases, leaving men without adequate legal recourse. Addressing these imbalances requires a twofold approach: creating gender-neutral laws that recognize the vulnerabilities of all genders and fostering societal awareness to break stereotypes. True equality in justice can only be achieved when the legal system protects and empowers everyone, irrespective of gender.
