Wait for it… “This was my first surf trip back in the water after my shoulder surgery, and I did two trips back to back to Mexico,” @eithanosborne told us. “It’s tough because you gotta take it easy when you’re coming back from an injury like that, but if I’m filming and I pull out of a good section, then I just feel like I’m blowing it. What’s the point of even going if I’m not trying 100%? “It worked out. Looking back at travel this past year. I can honestly say that Ireland was probably my favorite place I went! The Island of Ireland may be the most underrated surf spot in the world! Here’s what you need to know: 1. The Gulf Stream keeps the water much warmer than you’d think. It’s very comparable to central California temperatures. 2. There’s a huge proximity of all kinds of waves from expert slabs to gentle beach breaks for beginners especially in Western Ireland. A 4/3 + 3-5mm booties for the summer and 5/4 + 5mm bookings during winter and maybe some 3mm gloves is all you need. 3. A thriving surf community exists, but the crowds are still small. Nothing like you’d experience in Hawaii, California or Indonesia. 4. Big empty beaches, epic cliffs, sheep baaing in the distance with clean water made for much more beautiful scenery than I’d ever expect. 5. The locals are more friendly here than any other place I’ve ever surfed. 6. Having a beer with friends after you surf has got to be one of the greatest joys in life and Ireland is made for it. Fresh Guinness (which 100% tastes better there it’s magical) on tap everywhere and the pub scene is incredible. Vibrant, fun, aesthetically pleasing pubs everywhere! 7. On your lay days, go explore some castles! 8. Golf, golf and more golf! If there’s one thing the Irish like to do, it’s golfing. This isn’t my thing, but a lot of surfers I know love it and it’s worth mentioning. We did get lucky with great waves and weather with on shore wind being fairly common, but to avoid the crowds, it might be 100% worth it! Begin with waves you feel comfortable on and gradually push yourself as you gain experience - good or bad experience is experience remember that ;) Confidence grows when you succeed in small steps, and each small win makes the next challenge feel achievable. 2.⁠ ⁠Nervous system & Focus All I know is the fear my mind can create is usually a horror movie compared to the reality of the session - I try to remember fear often starts in your mind, not the water. Take deep, steady breaths, center yourself, and focus on the present moment. Visualize your wave, commit to it, and stay calm by relaxing breath and body - try box breathing! 3.⁠ ⁠Know Your Ocean When it comes to the ocean, knowledge is power. The more time spent learning its magical ways the more fun we can have with it. Spend time observing the waves, currents, and tides before you paddle out. The more you understand how the ocean moves, the more prepared you’ll feel. 4.⁠ ⁠Prepare (Breath holds and recovery) Information is power. Understanding how the breath affects the body and recovery will help you stay calm when having to take a set on the head. We teach you breath hold practices which will help improve your Co2 tolerance. 5.⁠ ⁠Etiquette and Crowd Management Sometimes, the trickiest thing is managing the human element in the line-up. Having an intimate and confident understanding of priorities and how to predict and navigate other people’s movements is the greatest skill to develop to keep everyone and yourself safe.
