I’m a psychologist and here’s the simplest way to understand stress 👇🏼 Clear water is your nervous system on a good day. A drop of dye is stress. It spreads fast. And when you keep stirring by replaying conversations, worrying or second guessing yourself, it only gets murkier. Here’s the cheat code. Regulation is you adding clean water back in. Breathing. Grounding. Movement. Fresh air. Cold water. Connection. Checking in with someone safe. The stress doesn’t disappear but your system becomes clearer, calmer and more capable. This is how your brain drops back into its steady zone. If this helped, save and share it for the next time things feel murky. ✨Want psychology you can actually use in your pocket? Comment “MINI”

Picture this: you’re in a meeting, and you need help with a task. You ask, “I need someone to help me pull the report together. Does anyone have the capacity?” Silence… People avert their gaze… No one responds. Has this ever happened to you when in a group setting? This frustrating situation is a prime example of the ‘Bystander Effect’ — a psychological phenomenon where individuals are less likely to offer help when there are others present. In this scenario, responsibility is diffused among the attendees, causing the plea for assistance to go unanswered and leaving the person in need feeling unsupported. And this applies in professional setting, social setting and even personal relationships. So what can you do? Rather than asking a group for help, go to individual directly. When you ask someone specific for assistance, they are more likely to feel personally responsible and invested in the task at hand. (PS – It’s worth noting that studies have also found that various other factors influence the likelihood of people offering to help, including whether it’s an emergency, the relationship dynamics and perceived expertise.) What about you? Have you ever noticed this in action? 👇 #diffusedpsychology #BystanderEffect #HelpingOthers #GroupDynamics #EmergencyResponse #Psychology #CommunitySupport #Teamwork #Responsibility #BeTheChange #humanbehavior #socialpsychology

Avoidance in our relationships and lives often stems from a deep-rooted protective mechanism within our nervous system, specifically the Dorsal Vagal Complex. This isn’t about not caring or intentionally avoiding issues. It’s an adaptive strategy our bodies use when faced with overwhelming stimulation or stress. Our nervous system might default to this shutdown response when conflict or overwhelming situations arise, trying to protect us by disconnecting from the situation. This can make us seem avoidant, even when we care deeply. If this state is familiar to you, please know that you’re not alone. I spent a lot of time here in my own life before I found somatic healing. It doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you, it’s simply your beautiful nervous system protecting you in the best way it knows how. It’s also possible to shift our state and come closer to regulation (which is where we experience things like connection, presence, joy, etc.). To overcome this, we need to regulate our nervous system and reconnect with our bodies, allowing us to move away from automatic shutdown responses and develop healthier ways to face and engage with challenges. For a deeper understanding of why this happens and how to address it, watch the video. 💕 With belief in your healing journey, Sarah ⚡️ PS: Before I got cut off, the last thing I wanted to share was, “because we have the capacity to be with the activation that’s present and process it through.”

Dr. Elaine Aron, who has researched HSPs for decades mentions that 15-20% of people are highly sensitive. That is a lot of us! It is an innate trait that results in our brains and nervous system working a little differently. It reflects a survival strategy. I want you to know there is nothing wrong with being an HSP. Being a minority comes with feeling like we are not normal but that is not true at all. In fact, HSPs have some amazing strengths too, such as heightened intuition and insight. I’ll share more of them in a post later this week ♥️ Important note: Many characteristics of HSP overlap with autism, PTSD, and ADHD; however they are not exactly the same and have differences as well. I advocate to normalize all neurodivergence; however, in this series, I will only be focusing on HSP 😊 Note: I encourage you to use the information I share on here as a guide. Everyone’s experience is unique so some strategies/tools might not be relevant to your specific situation. Please see disclaimer in my highlights. Take care of your mind and body. Love, Nawal ✨

When we experience trauma, our body copes by becoming hyper-vigilant. The easiest way to describe this is that the body turns on its alarm 24/7 or at least a majority of the time in an attempt to protect us. Hypervigilance is the most common symptoms of C-PTSD. Here’s an example: Let’s say that you had an unpredictable parent. Sometimes they were in a great upbeat mood. They were loving. Other times, out of nowhere, they yelled at you when you didn’t do anything (seemingly wrong). Or punished you harshly/shamed you. Or “lost it” when they were in a situation that was stressful. When this happened they didn’t explain or apologize. They would actually speak to you like nothing happened leaving you more confused + slowly teaching you that people cannot be trusted. Because their behavior was unpredictable, you felt unsafe regularly, + could not make sense of how the most important person in your world was so scary. Your nervous system learned to watch every change in mood, every facial expression. This hyper-vigilance was the only way your body knew to keep you safe. Because you weren’t developmentally capable of understanding: “Dad has his own emotional issues. He has insecurities + is stressed from his job. He was parented this exact same way...” you thought this meant something about who you were: “I’m bad” “I’m unlovable” “I’m not worthy.” I believe that most cases of what is labeled as social anxiety disorder actually stems from long term hypervigilance. The brain + body still on alert, especially in crowds or social situations where there’s a feeling of not being safe (strangers) or in control (unfamiliar place). SIGNS OF HYPER-VIGILANCE: - cyclical thoughts or worst case scenarios (thoughts mirror nervous system states) - social anxiety - fear of crowds - jumpy or nervousness for “no reason” - fear of loud noises - heart racing when someone comes into the room (common for adults of childhood abuse) -nightmares - insomnia - “over- reacting” (ex: the situation does not march the reaction) #selfhealers

Selective Mutism or Freeze Responses? It Could Be This Primitive Reflex 🧠❌ Kids with selective mutism often feel so anxious and overwhelmed that their words just won’t come out. One hidden reason? The Fear Paralysis Reflex — a primitive survival reflex that keeps the body stuck in “freeze” mode. When active, it can cause kids to shut down, avoid eye contact, and stay silent, even when they desperately want to speak. ⸻ 🧪 Quick Fear Paralysis Reflex Test: 👏 Do a loud clap behind your child. 👀 Watch for reactions:     •    Excessive blinking = hypersensitivity     •    Heart rate drops = Fear Paralysis Reflex active     •    Heart rate rises = more likely the Moro Reflex at play A child with fear paralysis may freeze entirely and seem emotionally “switched off.” ⸻ 🌟 Starfish Breathing Exercise to Help:     •    Curl up into a tight ball 🤲     •    Open arms and legs wide like a ⭐ starfish     •    Breathe deeply as you expand and contract     •    Perch on the edge of a chair for extra core engagement! Just 2 minutes a day can help calm the nervous system, reduce freeze responses, and support kids in finding their voice again. ⸻ 💬 Wondering if your child’s mutism or anxiety could be reflex-based? Cognitive dissonance is in the small moments when your words don’t quite match your actions, when something you did just doesn’t sit right, when you feel the need to explain yourself…even when no one’s asking. It’s not that you’re being fake, it’s that part of you is trying to keep the peace between who you think you are and what you just did.But the moment you notice it, really notice it, is the moment you get to choose differently. In 1957, the social psychologist Leon Festinger published A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance, introducing a concept that reshaped how we understand human reasoning. In one of Festinger’s most well-known experiments, participants performed a repetitive and meaningless task, then were asked to describe it as enjoyable. Those given minimal justification for lying later reported that they genuinely found the task interesting. Festinger later extended this observation through field research, studying groups whose deeply held beliefs were contradicted by reality. Instead of abandoning those beliefs, many intensified them, reshaping the interpretation of events to maintain coherence. This revealed something fundamental about human psychology. #psychology #experiment #book #research #belief
