This is not good enough. I welcome the Fair Work Commission’s recommendation to increase pay for community preschool teachers and educators.

The Fair Work Commission has found what Community preschool teachers have known all along. That this overwhelmingly feminised workforce has been systemically underpaid, and they require a structural increase in their wages. The NSW Government is responsible for over 80% of community preschool funding. It is their responsibility to fund this pay increase recommended by the FWC. Otherwise services will either have to close, reduce quality or raise fees. Quality costs money. The Treasurer and Minister for Education must act now to properly fund community preschools and protect this precious and high quality segment of our early childhood education and care sector.

I want to see genuine choice when it comes to childcare. There is a stealth tax on childcare, with Government taking a decision to increase the cost of getting a license, with no warning for providers. The Government is also making it harder for our community pre-schools to operate by not supporting equity in pay for pre-school teachers. Genuine choice in childcare is supported by Government not held back by its decisions.
