According to plate tectonics theory, Earth's outer shell is divided into multiple plates that slowly glide over the mantle. This slowly changes Earth's surface over time by merging, or separating, continents. A strike-slip fault is a type of fault where two blocks of the Earth move horizontally past each other. Instead of moving up or down, the movement is mainly sideways, caused by shear stress. This kind of motion can produce powerful earthquakes because stress builds up along the fault over time. In this reel, I used the Piqiang Fault in China as an example of a strike-slip fault. Another very famous example is the San Andreas Fault in the United States, which marks the boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. This simple sideways movement is responsible for some of the most significant earthquakes around the world. #Geology #StrikeSlipFault #Earthquakes #Tectonics #StructuralGeology

Mountains are built by slow, relentless forces beneath Earth’s surface. Most ranges form when tectonic plates collide, compressing and lifting the crust over millions of years. Volcanic activity adds another pathway, as repeated eruptions stack material upward into new landforms. Understanding these processes helps scientists model seismic risk, resource distribution, and long-term climate interactions. Continental drift describes the slow, continuous movement of Earth's continents over geological time, as initially proposed by Alfred Wegener in 1912. It explains that landmasses were once joined, supporting the idea of a supercontinent (Pangaea) that broke apart. Modern science recognizes this process as driven by plate tectonics.

Quick thought experiment… 🤔🌍 Picture a satellite watching Earth. Suddenly a colossal tsunami begins racing across the ocean. Could it cover entire countries? In reality, the numbers don’t support it. To push that much water high enough to flood large land areas, the ocean floor would have to move hundreds of metres instantly across massive distances. No known geological process on Earth can do that. Even the powerful events behind historic tsunamis only shift the seabed by a few metres. Energy spreads, friction slows waves, and gravity pulls water back down. So while tsunamis are incredibly dangerous locally, the idea of a planet-wide ocean wall just doesn’t line up with the physics of our planet. Still fascinating to imagine though. 🌊 #water #planetearth #seafloor #tectonics #research

How did the Himalayan mountain range form? The Himalayas were formed by the collision of two continental plates — the Indian Plate and the Asian Plate. This powerful tectonic process is still ongoing today, meaning the mountains are slowly rising even now. 📖 Digital Reading | Tectonics Observatory #Himalayas #PlateTectonics #Geology #EarthScience #ScienceExplained DidYouKnow ScienceFacts Archaeology STEM EarthDynamics
