ADGrowing up in a Latin household meant people making comments on my body daily.
Since I can remember.. Being a kid, being told not to eat too much because I would become like “fulanita” and the woman I was being compared to was just.. living her life.
Becoming a teenager meant being criticized for growing and going up in sizes.. like I’m not supposed to? It became “you’ll get cellulite just like so and so”..
When I became an adult I started to notice how most of the conversations at family functions, Christmas parties, birthdays, they would all eventually lead to “did you see so and so? They gained weight” and openly making people uncomfortable with their unsolicited advice.
“You should try this cleanse” “maybe if you tried harder you would lose weight, all it takes is self control” .. and the worst “ay mírala, bien flaca, así te ves mejor”
I wish I could tell you I have compassion for the previous generation of women in my family.. and to some extent, I do. They were probably just carrying on the cycle that they lived through. But it doesn’t mean I didn’t deserve better.
I’m glad I never fully bought into that life.. and I’m glad I’ve put in the work to become better and have a good relationship with food and exercise and that I can now be a safe space for other women and teach them how to do the same 🤎
