Day 0 of our Homeschool Science Diaries 🐞🦋 Today the kids helped set up the habitats for our ladybugs and butterflies. The ladybug larvae will grow inside their garden habitat where we’ll observe them as they develop. The butterfly caterpillars will stay in their cups for now, where they’ll eat and grow until they form their chrysalis. Once they reach that stage, we’ll transfer them into the butterfly habitat so we can watch the final transformation. Instead of just reading about metamorphosis, the kids get to observe the life cycle in real time, record their observations in their journals, and watch each stage unfold day by day. This is our third year doing this project, and the excitement never fades. Follow along as we document the transformation from larva → pupa → butterfly and ladybug. These sturdy insects live in the deserts of the southwestern United States, and they are best known for how they defend themselves from predators. When blue death feigning beetles are startled, they play dead. Many predators do not want to eat an animal that has already died for the same reason we wouldn't eat roadkill. Most animals would risk getting sick if they were to eat that! After fooling the predator and waiting for them to leave, the beetle will come back to life and continue on with their day.
