FIThe Master was the first film shot on 65mm in over 16 years. Paul Thomas Anderson originally planned to use the format for just 20% of the movie, mostly portraits. Then he saw the dailies. He ended up shooting 85% of the film on 65mm because nothing else came close.
No digital intermediate. No color correction suite.
Pure photochemical, start to finish.
This scene alone is proof it was the right call.

와킨 피닉스가 '연기의 신'으로 불리는 이유 ㄷㄷ 영화 <마스터(The Master)> 촬영 비하인드입니다.
극 중 입을 꽉 다물고 한쪽으로만 말하는 독특한 표정을 만들기 위해, 그는 실제로 치과를 찾아가 치아에 '금속 판'을 고정하는 시술을 받았습니다.
원래는 고무줄로 입을 묶어두려 했지만 힘이 약해 실패했고, 대신 나사가 박힌 금속 판을 그대로 두기로 했는데요.
이 나사들이 입 안쪽 볼을 계속 찌르고 상처를 냈는데, 와킨 피닉스는 오히려 그 '고통'이 캐릭터에 몰입하게 해주는 완벽한 자극제가 되었다고 합니다.
진짜 광기 그 자체... 연기를 위해 고통까지 이용하는 게 존경스럽네요.

It tells a story of a World War II Navy veteran who is struggling to adjust to a post war life and finds his way to a cult known as The Cause through its leader. He takes a liking to The Cause and begins travelling with the leader’s family to spread his teachings.
During an improvised jail scene, Joaquin Phoenix accidentally broke a real toilet in a historically preserved location, something he never intended or thought possible.
To perfect that distorted way of speaking he had metal plates attached to his teeth with rubber. When that failed, he removed them. But the metal plates with screw caused trauma to his inner cheek, were enough of a constant reminder which allowed him to play that aspect of the character.

THIn order to achieve the effect of clenching his mouth and talking out of one side, Joaquin Phoenix had his dentist attach metal plates to his teeth with rubber bands to hold them shut. The rubber bands weren't strong enough to hold his mouth shut, so he removed them. But the metal plates, complete with screws that slightly cut up the inside of his cheek, were enough of a constant reminder that it allowed him to play that aspect of the character.

CIPaul Thomas Anderson originally wanted to shoot the film utilizing VistaVision, the same widescreen format that Alfred Hitchcock used on some of his most important films during the late 1950's. Anderson later abandoned this idea in favor of the Super 65 cameras he would end up using. However, in 2019 Anderson would finally use VistaVision for his short film Anima, which served as a promotional video for the album of the same name by Thom Yorke, the longtime Radiohead bandmate of Jonny Greenwood, who composed the score for this film.

The Master (2012) follows Freddie Quell, a traumatized World War II veteran drifting through postwar America until he crosses paths with Lancaster Dodd, the magnetic leader of a self-styled spiritual movement called The Cause. What begins as a friendship built on fascination and control slowly turns into a battle between faith and freedom, master and disciple. One of the film’s strangest and most revealing moments comes when Dodd drunkenly tells a story about a dragon he once kept as a pet — feeding it raw meat, only for it to eventually eat him. Beneath the humor, it’s a confession: the dragon represents Dodd’s own ego and hunger for power, the uncontrollable force he thought he had mastered but which ultimately owns him. It’s the film in miniature — about men trying to cage the wildness within themselves and losing in the process.
Fun fact: Joaquin Phoenix improvised many of Freddie’s unpredictable movements and outbursts, including moments during the processing scenes, which so unsettled Philip Seymour Hoffman that his genuine reactions were kept in the final cut.
