The Thomas test is a physical examination technique used in physical therapy to assess the LENGTH of your hip flexors and quadriceps. 🦵🏼 If you’re one of my patients - you know how often we utilize this test and my favorite way to check if someone’s done their homework 😉 It’s helpful to know whether you should be spending time increasing flexibility of your hip flexors or quadriceps, for time purposes and to know about your body! Perform this on a box, bench, or bed in front of a mirror or film it 90 degrees from the side 📸 To interpret the results: ➡️ NORMAL (NEGATIVE): The extended leg remains flat on the table, this indicates normal hip flexor length. For quadriceps, the knee joint angle should be less than 100 degrees to classify as normal length. ➡️ POSITIVE HIP FLEXORS: If the extended leg raises off the table, indicates tightness in the hip flexors. ➡️ POSITIVE QUADRICEPS: The extended legs knee joint angle is greater than 100 degrees, indicates shortened quadriceps. ➡️ BOTH (+) HIP FLEXOR & QUAD: Extended leg is both raised off the table and the knee joint angle is greater than 100 degrees. Likely a lot of involvement from the Rectus femoris - your quad muscle that spans 2 joints and works as both a hip flexor and knee extender. Remember this test is looking at LENGTH, just because the muscle might be short - does not mean it’s strong. It can be short because it’s weak too. The “Thomas Test” is a physical therapy examination technique used to assess the length of your hip flexors & quads. BUT, it’s also a technique you can utilize by yourself to self-assess before a workout, on and off day, etc. to figure out where you need to address your mobility work! Perform this on a box, bench, or table (somewhere where you can lie your back completely flat). You will either need a mirror, partner, or use your phone to record in order to analyze. 🚨note: I exaggerated in this video for demonstration purposes, but the test can still be positive with less dramatic results. How to interpret: 💥NORMAL (negative): Back of the test thigh rests on the table and the knee flexes to ~80-90 degrees 💥 Positive HIP FLEXOR tightness: Back of thigh rests off the table but the knee still flexes to ~80 degrees. 💥Positive QUADRICEPS tightness: Back of thigh rests on table but knee flexion angle is < 80-90 degrees 💥Positive quadriceps AND hip flexors: back of the thigh rests OFF the table AND the knee flexion angle is < 80-90 degrees. It’s possible that they are, just people we’re hypermobile doesn’t mean we don’t have limited flexibility in certain parts of our body. Try the Thomas Test to find out! If you find some limited flexibility, the good news about being hypermobile is that with some gentle dynamic movements that flexibility will improve quickly. 
If you’ve got full flexibility, then you know it’s mostly likely weakness as a cause and here’s some options to start building up some strength of those hip flexors.
