The best betta tankmates are small, peaceful species, usually occupying a different level of the tank, that will allow your betta to be the King/Queen of the tank and that require the same conditions as your betta (ph, temp, hardness etc). Getrude's Rainbow Fish are small, peaceful fish that average about 3cm long. They are very timid, schooling fish and can often be outcompeted when it comes to food. They also like a lot of plant cover. They prefer soft to medium water with a ph of 4.5 - 7.5 and a temp of 22°C - 28°C. This ticks all the boxes for a perfect betta tankmate right? Well... that wasn't my experience. It turns out these fish are ENERGETIC! Like wow, I even struggled getting them on camera because they are SO FAST. They are also not timid AT ALL (or at least mine weren't) and they actually bullied my pygmys and my betta (I know I was shocked too) out of the way when it came to food! In fact the little school of them was so exhausting for my other fish I ended up having to return them to my local store. Maybe Gertrude's Rainbow Fish would work better with other more assertive species? Maybe that would make them act like the timid species they claim to be?
