Most throwers use chalk… but a lot of you are using way too much. In shot put, it’s hard to overdo it. In discus, too much chalk can actually make the implement slip. All you need is a small amount on the tips of your fingers and maybe a light touch on the palm. Barely any. If your hand is covered in loose, powdery chalk, the discus can slide out early and cost you distance. Keep it light. Just enough to improve grip — not change it. This tip is very simple, yet can get complex if not trained properly. As most successful throwers know “the longer your discus is behind your hip, the more you maximize your separation”. So, how does one’s “head/eye sight” contribute to that? Well, let’s try something: 1. Stand up & stretch your arms out wide. 2. While keeping your hips and head looking forward; rotate both arms as much as possible to the right side. 3. *take a mental note* of how far your were able to rotate to the right. 4. NOW…reset and repeat the same movement BUT THIS TIME, keep your hips forward and your eyes looking back at your right hand… 5. Did you notice how you were able to create more rotation once your eyes were looking back at your right hand? This is a huge technical concept in elite discus throwing and something that separates average throwers from high-level ones. In short, keeping you’re head/eyes back allows for the following: 1. Maximizes Separation 2. Improves Torque & Rotational Power 3. Prevents Early Pulling 4. Creates a Longer Acceleration Path 5. Maintains Orbit Integrity 6. Helps Timing Into the Power Position . .
