GOHow do these DIY tick tubes reduce ticks in your yard and lower Lyme Disrase risks?
• Ticks have a 2-year life cycle. In their first, immature, nymph phase, they host on mice and other small rodents. They actually “catch” /get infected with Lyme and other vector borne diseases from the rodents. So it’s actually way more about mice than deer. 🐁
•Tick tubes are toilet paper tubes stuffed with permethrin soaked cotton balls. Mice are always looking for bedding materials. They take them into their nests and give themselves a little tick bath. The small amount of permethin on the skin should not hurt the mice nor any predator that eats the mice. Additionally, while permethrin kills bees when airborne, cotton balls put under a log should not pose any threat to our pollinators.
• Here’s how you make them. 1) collect TP tubes 2) 7% permethrin in a spray bottle (we buy concentrate from domyown.com) 2) gloved and outside, spray the cotton balls liberally, tossing to dampen 3) stuff 5 cotton balls into TP tube–do not overstuff! 4) set 12/quarter acre in locations where a mouse would hide–think like a mouse! Under logs, in piles of firewood. Mice don’t like open areas. 5) Watch those critters gratefully gather up your cotton. We put out approximately 1200 tick tubes/year in our 30 acre property. Within a few weeks, every tube will be empty.

In Africa, some of the largest ticks belong to species like the Amblyomma hebraeum and Hyalomma ticks—parasites that may look small at first but can grow several times their size when feeding on blood.
Unfed, many large ticks are only about 3–5 mm long, but once attached to a host, they can expand dramatically, becoming swollen, stretched, and far more visible. Some African species are considered among the largest and most aggressive, actively seeking hosts rather than just waiting.
Ticks like the South African bont tick are known for their distinct patterns and strong grip, attaching to animals such as cattle, wildlife, and even humans. Meanwhile, certain African soft ticks can reach up to 20 mm (2 cm) in length, making them among the largest tick types recorded on the continent.
But the real danger isn’t just size—it’s what they carry. Many ticks in Africa are vectors of serious diseases, transferring pathogens directly into the bloodstream while feeding.
What looks like a tiny insect is actually a precision parasite, designed to latch on, expand, and feed—turning a few millimeters into something far more disturbing.
