HIOn November 30, 1996, Tiny Tim took the stage in Minneapolis for a benefit concert, dressed the same way audiences had seen for decades. He sang “Tiptoe Through the Tulips,” smiling and waving as he reached the final lines. Near the end of the song, his voice faltered. He took a few steps forward, bowed slightly, and then dropped to the floor in full view of the crowd.
At first, some in the audience thought it was part of the act. The music stopped. People rushed the stage as Tiny Tim lay motionless, his ukulele still nearby. Paramedics were called immediately and worked on him onstage before transporting him to Hennepin County Medical Center. Witnesses later said the room went silent except for the sound of emergency instructions being shouted over the crowd.
Doctors confirmed he had suffered a massive heart attack. The collapse was not his first warning; he had survived a serious cardiac episode earlier that year and had been advised to stop performing. He ignored it. Friends and family said he believed performing was inseparable from being alive, and he continued booking shows despite visible physical strain.
Tiny Tim was pronounced dead later that night at the hospital. He was 64 years old. The cause of death was listed as cardiac arrest following the onstage heart attack. His final performance ended exactly where it happened, under stage lights, in front of a live audience, moments after finishing the song he was most known for.
