KKEverything was going well until I cut my toenail in the round shape from the side. This led to Ingrown toenail, frequently injuring my skin tissues around it.
I took a course of Antibiotics and it recovered but after some time, the pain again started and this time it was very sensitive to touch and Red all around.
The doctor(surgeon) decided immediately to remove 20% of the ingrown toenail and this meant giving local anaesthesia and lots of Pain. (I literally fainted on my first dressing).
Here is what you all must know to Avoid this situation:
If you notice any bleeding that won’t stop, redness spreading, pus, increasing pain, warmth, or any non-healing sore, plz contact your diabetes care team or podiatrist immediately. People with diabetes, those who have uncontrolled sugar levels/lots of fluctuations, can get infections that spread quickly because of reduced circulation and nerve damage.
Simple Tips to NOT get into such situation:
1. Check your feet first. Look for cuts, redness, swelling, blisters, discharge, or areas of numbness. If you see any of these, don’t cut- see your foot clinic/podiatrist.
2. Soften nails (optional). Trim after a bath/shower when nails are slightly softer but don’t soak feet for long because over-soaking can make skin fragile. Pat feet fully dry, especially between toes.
3. Sit comfortably with good light. Use a mirror or ask someone to help if needed.
4. Trim straight across. Cut the nail straight across-don’t round the corners or cut down the sides (that increases ingrown toenail risk). Leave the nail level with the end of the toe or a tiny bit longer.
5. Don’t cut nails too short. Avoid cutting into the skin or the soft tissue under the nail. If nails are thick or hard to cut, see a podiatrist or use a file to reduce thickness.
6. Smooth edges. File any sharp corners or edges so they won’t catch on socks/shoes.
7. Clean up and moisturize. Wipe away nail clippings, wash/dry feet, and apply moisturizer to the top and bottom of the foot — avoid putting cream between toes.
