What makes a Type 3 SLAP Tear distinct? ▪️In a Type 3 SLAP tear, a bucket-handle tear occurs in the labrum. ▪️The torn part flips into the joint, but the biceps tendon remains intact and unaffected. ▪️This can cause mechanical symptoms such as clicking, catching, or locking during shoulder movement. Treatment Options Conservative (Non-surgical) Treatment: ▪️Rest and activity modification: Avoiding aggravating activities. ▪️Physiotherapy : Focuses on strengthening the rotator cuff and shoulder stabilisers. ▪️Anti-inflammatory medications: To manage pain and inflammation. Surgical Treatment: ▪️Arthroscopic repair: The torn piece of the labrum is removed (debridement), especially in a Type 3 tear. ▪️Biceps tenodesis (if needed): In cases with concurrent biceps involvement (though not typical for Type 3). This high school baseball player is rehabbing a torn labrum without surgery so we’re utilizing the @neufitrfp mapping feature that allows us to find points of compensation within a muscle group. This takes the guessing out of what muscles are being shut down and compensated for after an injury. We are having him go throw his throwing mechanics while 100% of his muscle fibers are activated and participating in the drill which will further solidify his neuromuscular pattern that will allow him to return to baseball faster and stay injury free upon return. It can be a source of shoulder discomfort in some cases, particularly during overhead activities, but is frequently an incidental finding on imaging. Treatment for a type I SLAP tear is usually conservative. The focus is on reducing pain and improving function through activity modification, manual therapy, and a structured rehabilitation programme targeting shoulder mobility and strength, particularly in the rotator cuff and scapular stabilisers. Anti-inflammatory medication may be used short-term to manage pain. Surgery is rarely required for type I tears. If it is performed, it usually involves debridement of the frayed labrum rather than repair. I tore my labrum/rotator cuff back in 2021 but avoided surgery like the plague until the pain started preventing me from doing the things I loved. I caved in July of 2024 & finally got the surgery but was terrified to lose all the progress I had made- so here are my lessons learned from rehab/recovery over the last 7 months ⤵️ 👉🏼 It’s actually REALLY hard to lose muscle & it doesn’t happen over night. I lost about 2lbs of muscle total. 👉🏼 Just because you can’t workout how you used to, doesn’t mean you can’t workout at all. For me, that looked like a lot of walking, peloton, and training LEGS. 👉🏼 Sometimes you gotta take a step back in order to propel forward. I was in constant pain, my movement patterns were off & I wasn’t making the progress I knew I was capable of & now I’m rebuilding w/out pain & proper mind/body connection. 👉🏼 You won’t gain weight or get fat from taking a few months off from the gym as long as eat well & move. My weight didn’t change at all, I continued to fuel my body w/ adequate protein & lots of movement. 👉🏼 It’s frustrating “starting over”, being sore, & feeling weak in the gym. It sometimes felt like I lost part of my identity w/out the gym. But keep showing up, even when you don’t want…& before you know it, you’ll hit 20 pull ups or whatever you’re goal is 🤪 Ps I hit 12 pull ups today 🥹🤘🏼, 8 more to go. Post op Shoulder Week 1! A bankart repair is an arthroscopic surgery to reattach and tighten the labrum. This type of injury is often do to a fall on an outstretched hand or arm (FOOSH). Week 1 indications for this type of patient is 1. PASSIVE ROM in flexion, 2. Minimal IR and ER in the scapular plane 3. Elbow and Cervical mobility 4. Decrease post op symptoms 5. Maintain body mechanics (controlled scapular retractions) 6. Continue to LIFT other parts of the body safely One of the greatest challenges for this type of patient is sleep do to the shoulder brace (bump).
