Un día como hoy, 11 de agosto, pero del año 117 d.C., el mundo romano perdió a uno de sus más grandes gobernantes: Marco Ulpio Trajano, el emperador que llevó al Imperio a su máxima gloria.
Natural de Itálica, en la provincia de Hispania, Trajano ascendió desde la disciplina militar hasta la púrpura imperial. Hombre de acción y visión, conquistó Dacia tras duras campañas, incorporando sus tierras y riquezas a Roma. Su triunfo en Oriente, con la anexión de Arabia y victorias en Armenia y Mesopotamia, expandió las fronteras hasta límites jamás vistos.
Pero su legado no se forjó solo en el campo de batalla: fue un constructor incansable. El Foro y la Columna de Trajano, puertos, carreteras y acueductos dieron prosperidad a generaciones. Su justicia y cercanía con el pueblo le valieron el título de optimus princeps, “el mejor emperador”.
Su final fue tan humano como su vida fue grandiosa. De regreso desde Oriente, enfermo y agotado por años de campaña, se detuvo en la ciudad de Selinunte, en Cilicia. Allí, entre fiebres y la fatiga de su último viaje, comprendió que no vería de nuevo Roma. Murió lejos de la urbe que había engrandecido, confiando el Imperio a su sucesor Adriano.
Sus cenizas reposarían en la base de la famosa columna que él mismo hizo erigir.
Hoy, recordamos no solo al conquistador, sino al hombre que, desde Hispania, se convirtió en el emperador más grande de Roma.

Apollodorus of Damascus was an architect and engineer from Roman Syria, who flourished during the 2nd century AD. His massive architectural output gained him immense popularity during his time.
