DJTime to get a little deeper on 'Wax Lyrical'
This post is a nod to all the DJs and soundsystems in the 80's that had a profound impact and musical influence on a young me. Thank you TNT, Gemi Magic, Beatfreak, Madhatters, 5th Avenue, Mistri, GQ, Manhattan and of course Funky Express. Those tapes had me researching, hunting and saving for music. Sometimes hard to find pieces (hence the name Rare Groove), sometimes validating my own taste with things I'd already bought. The availability or lack of, made the find even more joyous.
'Just Let Me Be Close To You' was one of those records that stood out. A slow fade on the intro, a 'dutty' bass thats a definite feature and Billy Valentine's vocal...once your hear it, you never forget it. Hearing the MC talk over the intro, I would close my eyes and imagine being in that room. Being touched by music like this. Being an adult, going out all the time to these parties...funny how lives turn out sometimes. I never would've imagined.
The album 'First Take' has another couple a big tunes on it 'This Kind of Love' and a track made famous by Simply Red in 1985, their debut single 'Money's Too Tight To Mention'. Have you heard it? The Valentine Bro's version tho...jeez.
